Volunteer
Parent Volunteering
Four Corners Montessori Academy believes strongly in parent participation, so they have parent volunteers in the school on a daily basis. Since the Montessori philosophy structures classrooms in a way most parents are not used to, FCMA has a volunteer training program where the Head of School gives parents more information about Montessori philosophy, and the functioning of the school. She reviews how to talk with children properly, and guides them in their interactions with the children. A background check is performed on all volunteers. FCMA requires each family volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per family each school year.
Volunteers can help in many ways. They can come in and read to children, listen to children read, cook, do art projects, do practical life lessons such as knitting, sewing, etc. They can help at lunch and recess, or they can work in the classroom as directed by the staff. Volunteers are also used in the office to do laminating, copying, preparing materials for staff, mailings and organizing. If parents are not able to volunteer during school hours, they can take things home to help. For instance, they can prepare Scholastic book club orders, Box Tops for Education, Campbell soup labels, or cut materials.
Student Volunteering
Four Corners Montessori Academy believes in student volunteer projects as well. We believe that teaching children to be an active and helpful part of the community now will make them grow into more active and productive adults. Our students have collected for food pantries, visited and donated to an animal shelter, collected funds for Haiti relief. We also have a group that goes to a food bank to serve lunch to the homeless.
Volunteering is not only done outside the school walls. Within the school, we have older students volunteer in younger student classrooms to read and help the teacher in any way they can.
