Michigan Green School
We are a Michigan Green School!
During the 2010/2011 school year, Four Corners Montessori Academy earned Evergreen status - the highest certification - as a Michigan Green School!
Michigan Green Schools is a non-profit agency dedicated to assisting all Michigan schools - public and private - achieve environmental goals which include protecting the air, land, water and animals of our state along with world outreach through good ecological practices and the teaching of educational stewardship of students pre-kindergarten through senior high school. Certification must be re-applied for annually.
Here are some of the goals we have to meet certification requirements as a Michigan Green School for this 2011/2012 school year:
- The school recycles paper.
- The school reuses its magazines and newspapers for other projects.
- The school will adopt an endangered species animal and post a picture of the animal in a main traffic area.
- The school media center updates its print and non-print ecological materials regularly.
- Students at the school will participate in a planned program of energy savings, including dusting coils on cafeteria refrigerators, placing film on windows, etc.
- The school has established and will maintain a natural Michigan garden project with native plants.
- The school has a printer cartridge recycling program through which the school earns money by selling the cartridges to companies that buy cartridges from schools.
- The school recycles batteries and has designated a representative to return them to an appropriate recycling program.
- The school recycles cellular telephones and receives money for the telephones from recycling companies that work with schools.
- The school observes Earth Day in April.
- Art classes at the school have a poster-making event to support ecology concerns and a school-wide display in conjunction with Earth Day activities.
- The school's classes visit internet sites where clicking saves rainforest habitat.
- The school maintains a Green Schools bulletin board to show what the school is doing toward Green Schools efforts
- Our school collects items like juice pouches and zipper bags and recycles them via TerraCycle.
- Extra lunch program food was donated at the end of the previous year to a local food bank.
- Classes will visit the zoos to learn more about wild animals.
- The school will have an Endangered Species Awareness week to learn more about endangered animals.
- Weekly paper newsletters are now emailed to families electronically.
